Latent Image

You found her camera in a forest where every direction looks the same. It only photographs the past.

Take a picture and the print develops into the afternoon she walked through here, years ago: the path that has since grown over, the red ribbons she tied to the trees, and her, somewhere ahead. Hold the photo up against the dark around you, and go the way she went.

Then the film runs low, the ribbons in the real forest have faded to grey, and the woods get darker. Only the flash shows what is still there, and at the very end the only map left is her own photographs of the places she slipped through.

Controls

WASD move / mouse look / Shift run / left click take a photo (fires the flash when you are out of film) / hold right click raise a photo / mouse wheel switch photos / Esc menu / R restart

Made in Unity 6 (URP) for USC CTIN 389. There are no words anywhere in the game. Headphones recommended.

macOS

The Mac build is not notarized. If macOS says it cannot verify the developer, right click the app and choose Open. If it says the app can't be opened and only offers OK, open Terminal in the folder with the app and run xattr -cr "Develop.app" and then chmod +x "Develop.app/Contents/MacOS/"*. The app is named Develop, the working title.
